"Watching The River Run" - Submitted May 30, 2002
Please answer this question for me: Are the lyrics to "Watching The River Run" about relationships? Life in general? Perhaps they're to be taken literally? I realize that the song can be interpreted in any way an individual chooses to, but it has great significance to me and I'd just like to know the original context.
"Watching the River Run" was written as an experiment, and in some ways, it wrote itself. Jimmy and I took turns writing each line, trading off, without ever discussing what the song was about. The game was to not say a word. Incredibly, the lyrics came out intact without a change ever being made. I'd say that song was "guided."
Like you, I had to interpret the meaning from the song itself, as I set no intent for the lyrics beforehand. To me, it's always been a song about life and consciousness, akin to Hess' "Siddhartha."
